We start our archive review today back in 2002. Kelly Wenberg is our guide in Ontonagon County, just north of Bruce Crossing, on a hike in to check out the O-Kun-de-Kun falls. It's a short hike in, about 1.3 miles and Kelly remarked at the time that it was down a slippery trail, but well worth the trek.

In 2016, fourteen years later, Bob Gilreath and his wife Liz made the trip there, too. You can see from the sign Liz is reading, that there are other choices for hiking in the same area, too. Bob did mention walking on boardwalks over the swampy areas to the upper falls, so I'm guessing some improvements were made over the years since Kelly visited.

Our bonus shot today, is from Christi Schmitt, who told me that her favorite place to hike in the Marquette area is between Wetmore Landing and Little Presque Isle Point (which is out past Sugarloaf Mountain). She was out there recently to snap today's third shot, which actually reminds me a little of the Pictured Rocks Lakeshore, but looks to be more red sandstone on the cliff in the distance.

I've often heard talk of Wetmore Landing, but have never had to opportunity to check it out, so if you're in the same boat as me, then today's video from Michael Landis will give you a good view of the area, including a glimpse of Little Presque Isle, Sugarloaf Mountain and Partridge Island, all in the background of the drone video. Enjoy the tour!

Love that first picture. Makes me think about my
dad, out fishing in the rivers. How I would love
to be sitting out on those rocks. I can't get
enough of the lake pictures and videos. Thanks
for that!

Drones bring us such beauty! Thank you!!

I too like the first picture. Waterfalls are one of nature's finest offerings.

According to Google Earth, it looks like there's a pretty good two track leading to the falls. I don't who owns the access rights if it matters. Does anyone know anything about the bridge just upstream? It looks like some sort of suspension bridge.

By D. A. (Midwested) on Saturday, May 13, 2017 - 02:10 pm:

Correct that. The bridge is downstream.

I agree with Donna, drones are like the next step in our evolutionary, outdoor, visual stimulus between interspecific drone/human species. (Wow, ya'll feelin me yet?)

D. A. (Midwested),

We need to deploy drones immediately to check out the situation and terrain!! Yes, Alex, we're right there with you!

Man, the pictures of Wetmore Landing sure bring back the memories.

Here's a post that mentions the bridge:

The trail head to the falls is located on the east side of US 45 about 8 miles north of Bruce Crossing. There are signs for the parking area. The trail to the falls is part of the North Country Trail. It is a 1.3 mile fairly level hike to the falls. Before you reach the main falls you will reach a smaller 10' plunge upstream. Keep going! The first time I tried to visit O Kun de Kun I stopped at the upper falls, thinking I had reached my destination. The real falls is just a short distance downstream. The trail crosses a suspsension bridge below the falls. If you have not gone far enough to see the bridge, keep going.

Beautiful and unique U.P. scenery.

I love seeing O-Kun-de-Kun falls here once again.
It is, like so many other wondrous places in da UP, a nearly secret place, almost "hidden in plain sight".
