Looking back into the Pasty Cam archives, it's evident that that Soo Locks is a popular place for both U.P. residents and tourists alike. But two years ago, in 2015, we were right on board the Cason J Callaway with wheelsman, Keith Baker. Check out the ice ahead, as the Callaway enters the Lock in the first photo. Then in the second shot, you can see that Lake Superior was still quite icy that year on this day. I can't imagine the sounds there must be as the boat is making its way through ice like that.

It's a different story this year, the ice is all but gone and unless there's a storm like we just had late this week, the sailing is smooth. David Kaye snapped the third photo recently, as the Spruceglen was up bound heading out of the Locks. This one really caught my eye, because most of the photos taken at the Locks are daytime shots, so this one with the coloring of the sky and the lights glowing is unique.

I've often wondered what takes place during the winter months when the Locks are closed to shipping, so I was excited to find a video that gives us a glimpse of what the Army Corp of Engineers does there when the freighters aren't passing through. This was filmed in 2013 and shows the Locks waking up for the shipping season, too. Amazing the work that goes on to make sure the Locks will operate smoothly.

That video is amazing! What an engineering marvel for it's time...like putting the Rover on Mars.

I agree with Alex ~ amazing video! Very interesting to see 'inside' the locks.

Terrible to read of the death of the MTU student from hypothermia on Saturday.

That death is sad...an unexpected tragedy.

That news about an MTU student is so tragic.

The Soo is definitely worth visiting. Sad about
that student!
