You never know what you'll find when you look back in the Pasty Cam archives. Like the first two photos that were snapped by Brooke Gubacz when she made a spring visit to the top of Brockway Mountain back in 2010. The small building is actually a shelter for the person that spends his days counting the raptors that migrate past Brockway. For the times that there aren't any raptors flying by to count, then the view from UP there is an outstanding bonus, too.

In case you're wondering what a raptor is, it's a bird of prey, such as an eagle, hawk, falcon, etc. Looking further back into the archives, to 2003, I found a shot of a raptor that Robert C. Wetton (RCW) had snapped. That's a turkey vulture just landing in the tree there, where it will sit and survey its surroundings until it finds some prey for lunch.

Our video today gives us some more information about the bird migration and counting of them. It first appeared on the TV6 news back in 2013. Quite an interesting look into why and how it's done.

Wow, never knew that was there, I would think that shelter would blow away in a big storm! I would think a flask would be must to keep warm! :=))

I still have my tally cards from counts done in 1975 & 1976. Occasionally we'd have to hike up through some snow from the Copper Harbor end before the road got plowed clear. No shelter at that time. Would just lay low to keep out of the wind.

There is a webpage and a Facebook page for the Brockway migrations. I enjoy reading it, and it gives me fuel for the arguments that there are no golden eagles in Michigan!

I don't recall that structure either, I guess I'm always to occupied with the view of the surrounding lake and countryside.

I'm glad you said what that shelter is for. I thought it was the customs shack at the boarder between the U.P. and Wisconsin. Kinda like the customs shacks at the end of the Mackinac Bridge.

What a beautiful view in that 2nd picture. Can't
tell you how many times I've seen that. But I never
tire of it.
