Continuing coverage of the Michigan Tech Winter Carnival, another of the popular attractions is the Torchlight Parade, followed by the Fireworks display. Jeff Dennis and his daughter took a ride to view these festivities, but not just any ride. Dad drove them UP to Houghton on his snowmobile. They parked across from Mont Ripley Ski Hill, along the snowmobile trail on the waterfront there.

I'd have to say they had probably the best seat in the house, both for watching the lit torches parade down the ski hill and then for the colorful fireworks lighting the skyline over the ski hill. Anybody can hop in a car to go and watch these displays, but Jeff has gone ahead and made it a night that his daughter will talk about for years to come, by getting out there and enjoying our Keweenaw winter with her!

Happy Valentine's Day

We missed the fireworks because we headed home that
day. What a fun way to watch! Thanks for sharing!

Greetings:

Along the ridge about midway between the left side and the actual torchlight parade in the first Torchlight Parade photo, what is that bright white, square looking light. Is that the Quincy shaft house?

I watched everything from my computer, but, of course, everything was in black and white...:O)
I have seen the fireworks several times already so it did not matter much, to me, it was in black and white. It was like watching them before there was color t.v...LOL...LOL :O)

Nice pix! Looks rather bright outside...like evening twilight?

Hi
Looks like great winter fun. Alex, with regard to the brightness, I know that the moon has been full/near full recently. But I'll let the photographer comment.

The best part of the fireworks was the weather which unlike the rest of Winter Carnival was the pits. Sun finally came out Yesterday, Monday morning as we packed to leave. Sunrise was nice since it was about the only time we saw the sun for more than a couple minutes while looking at the statues on Thursday. All this for the entire week we where there. High winds and 9 degree weather for the all-nighter was so much fun. Kudos to all the Tech students for all the hard work under brutal conditions.

I used to was one and now I are an Enginer. Never did well in the English courses :)

What else can you expect from the Finish snow god Eh? A fickle god at best but the boys and girls on their machines had fun with all the new snow.

One other positive was we got to see Tech win the carnival trophy to continue a long winning streak with a great second game.

The old plaque I remember seeing around Tech said:

"Used to be I couldn't spell in-ga-near, now I are one."

and walking into the snack bar area of the old Memorial Union was a wood plank that stated:

"Through these portals pass the best d@mn engineers in the world."

JT - Yes, that is the Quincy mine shaft.
They light it all up at night.
