Jeff Kalember and his son, Andrew, did some exploring recently and headed to the top of Bare Bluff. We've been up there before on the Pasty Cam, but this time we have photos of the climb to the top these two adventurers made. It looks a bit steep and rocky in places, but then when you look at the rest of the pictures, you see that it's well worth the effort to get there.

The view of Lake Superior and the tip of the Keweenaw are outstanding from UP there and the pictures give you a good perspective of how high up your are when you get there. The Keweenaw in all its glory, it doesn't get much better than this.

In the last photo; what's interesting is that the Keweenaw Fault, for the most part, follows the shape of the shoreline to the tip before heading out into the Lake.

Your piece of useless knowledge for the day! ;-)

Looks interesting + challenging.

That is fabulous and thank you for sharing. My
legs won't make that trek...so for you folks that
are able bodied, God Bless and take advantage!!
These are stunning shots and awesome memories!!!

Fantastic pics. I was up there last year. I think
the view is one of the best in the Keweenaw!

OK for those of us that have no idea just where you are on the Keweenaw where are you and how do you get there?

Looks like the south shore of the Keweenaw if that is the tip in the distance.

One ex Tech student that has never heard of it.

You get there by driving the Lac La Belle/Bete Grise Road about 3 miles east of Lac La Belle, then turn left on the Smith Fisheries Road for about 2.5 miles further east to a parking area. Then walk along the trails. After the first 3/4 mile you reach the trail head with a sign. It's a circular trail from there. The rough sections seen in today's pictures can pretty much be avoided by taking the clockwise route up and then come back the same way. The counter-clockwise route is steeper and has worse footing.

Here's a very good website that states it all much better:
http://www.thingstodointheup.com/barebluff/

I've never been all the way to the top but I'm going again in 3 weeks. Hope to see you there.

p.s. The Smith Fisheries Road typically doesn't require a 4 wheel drive to the parking area unless it's been real wet, but I would take my Dad's Crown Victoria up there either.

By D. A. (Midwested) on Monday, July 11, 2016 - 09:59 pm:

Correction:
I would NOT take my Dad's Crown Victoria, but I have made that same kind of mistake before.

The parking area is located at:
47°23'49.73"N
87°54'41.77"W

The overlook is located at:
47°23'48.18"N
87°53'20.04"W

One of my favorite spots, beautiful photos! We 4 wheel around there all the time. I wouldn't go with a 2 wheel drive, but that's just me.... and it's a long walk, or swim if you make a mistake!:=)

And you are right Mary.... It doesn't get any better than that!!
I hope to sneak U.P. to Marquett/Keweenaw in late July or in early August for a couple of days, I really need a fix in God's Country!!!

Fabulous...my first UP hike and one of my favorite places on earth!
- The trail is well marked with blue dots on the trees, as you can see in the second shot.
- Taking the trail to the left takes you up the back side of the bluff...a medium intensity hike.
- At the top, you walk out of the tree line and witness the splendor captured in shots 5 & 6.
And I concur..."it doesn't get much better than this".
Thanks for these pix, because I don't think I will ever see it again.

Another good read is the Michigan Nature Association's brochure on Bare Bluff. In it, you'll discover that the Bluff is made of a relatively rare rock type on the Keweenaw, rhyolite.
