When it comes to happenings on the Portage Canal near the Lift Bridge, Jon Hopper has a front row seat. Because of that, he was able to capture the USCGC Alder as she was approaching the Lift Bridge and heading under last Wednesday... but the conditions at this moment (Monday afternoon) are almost identical.

Here's the official word from the Boatnerd site about the Alder's mission on the Portage Canal last Wednesday:

Quote:

Icebreaking today in Keweenaw Waterway
4/6 - At the request of local officials, the United States Coast Guard cutter Alder will conduct icebreaking operations in the Keweenaw Waterway on Wednesday, April 6.

Alder will make their approach to the waterway from the east and enter at Keweenaw Bay. The cutter will transit west through Portage Lake, ending at the upper entry and the open waters of Lake Superior. All recreational users of the Keweenaw Waterway should plan their activities carefully and use caution near the ice.
The Alder performed her mission amidst snow squalls of varying degrees that day and you can see from Jon's photos that there wasn't any ice around or near the Bridge, so she had smooth sailing there. The ice in question was further up and down the canal from what I understand.

Superior! Interesting thought!

Marge, I've walked over some of those icebergs.
They are incredible. Winter in the UP is
certainly long and cold but it dies have its
treasures.

When the Coast Guard breaks the ice in the canal the Ranger III headed to Isle Royale is not many days away.

Great pictures. What a great place to
have a front row seat.

By Daveofmohawk (Daveofmohawk) on Tuesday, April 12, 2016 - 10:05 am:

The first trip of the Ranger III to Isle Royale is tentatively scheduled for April 26th. There's still plenty of ice cover on Portage Lake but none from Houghton to the Upper Entry.
