Laurie Bashaw has been doing a bit of waterfall hunting lately and today shares two of them she visited... one in the Munising area and the other in the Big Bay area near Marquette.

First stop is the Laughing Whitefish Falls, which is about 30 miles from Munising and is reported to be one of the tallest waterfalls in Michigan. To reach the top of the falls, you hike along a mile long trail and once you arrive, there is a large staircase that you can take to the bottom of the falls, too. Great viewing from both vantage points.

The bottom two photos Laurie took 8 miles southwest of Big Bay, at the Pinnacle Falls. It's reported to be a remote falls to visit and an adventure getting there. It's located on the Yellow Dog River, but sounds like it's a bit more difficult to find and get to. This link provides you with directions and some tips about getting there.

Get out there and enjoy the U.P.!

Beautiful shots, Laurie! I'm curious to know how the Laughing Whitefish Falls got its name.
I've had lots of Whitefish but none of them were laughing,;>

Too funny, Shirley :-)

I love pictures of Falls any time. Thanks for
sharing these. They're terrific.

Greetings:

The Laughing Whitefish Falls seem to be low for this time of year. Has the weather been dry around the Munising area?

Ask and you shall receive......

From the Northland Adventurer website:

Quote:

The falls got their name from the Laughing Whitefish River. At the mouth of the river, where it empties into Lake Superior, the Ojibwe from Lake Superior said to looked like a laughing whitefish. The scientific explanation credits an abrupt limestone ridge, and the bank cascades out into a fan-shaped wall of water, which to some looks like the mouth of a fish.

I always thought it got its name from the fact that everytime I attempt to catch whitefish, they always laugh at me!

lol, maybe you're using the wrong bait, Capt.

BTW, thanks for the explanation, now it makes sense.

Pleasant pix and the name makes sense. Hasn't anyone ever heard of Big Mouth Billy Bass?

To start the day with those wonderful views of waterfalls makes the sun shine brighter and puts a spring in my step. Thanks for sharing.

Great photos of the falls! Those are on our agenda for our visit to
the UP the end of this month. We're doing a "destination story"
about touring the UP for our show, Rollin' On TV, that's all about
RVs and the RV lifestyle. You can find us on a variety of broadcast
cable networks nationwide or our shows are also viewable online.
We know the hard part will be fitting in so many of the great fun
things there are to do in the UP. We're excited to be coming your
way!

Good luck with that, Jeff and like the rest of us, I know you will find it an amazing place.
I will keep an eye open for your show.

Jeff, you've got your work cut out for you.
There are (click →) more than 300 waterfalls in "da UP"!
(And so much more!) Enjoy!
