Melanie Hakala Rossi was one of many here in the Keweenaw that headed to the shores of Lake Superior at the Eagle Harbor Beach. She said she's never seen that many people on the beach there before and added that it was a perfect day for it, as the west wind blew the warm water in and the bugs away.

Sure looks like a great way to beat the heat that we've been having here UP North, hitting 90° and above is a bit unusual for us northerners. Melanie also mentioned there was a guy from North Carolina with people she was visiting on the beach, it was his first time in Michigan. His wife called while they were there on the beach and he told her in his southern accent, "There's trees on the beach." Something us Yoopers are more than used to seeing, so it doesn't even cross our minds, but folks from the southern part of our country are used to seeing just beach sand and maybe tall beach grass and that's it. Fun to see the beauty of the U.P. through a newcomer's eyes

lots of people enjoying the summer.

I am not a summer person. my mom was the same way. she would just about spend the whole summer in her bedroom with the air conditioner running.

enjoy the summer everybody. :O)

What the guy from North Carolina should have been excited about is that there are no sharks in the water!

Nice to see a lot of people on the beach enjoying the warm weather and the cooling effect of the water. For me, it hasn't been warm enough to go swimming since 1966. Perhaps someday though.

I cut and pasted this from boatnerd.com;

7/30 - Copper Harbor, Mich. – The Isle Royale Queen IV, operating out of Copper Harbor, ran aground Tuesday while on an evening cruise. U.S. Coast Guard was contacted by the Negaunee dispatch and told that the excursion vessel had run aground inside the harbor.

Lt. J.G. Derek Puzzouli of the Sault Ste. Marie Coast Guard station said in response to the call, Guardsmen from Coast Guard Station Portage in Dollar Bay were dispatched to the scene.

"By the time they (the crew from Portage) reached the scene," Puzzuoli said, "the passengers had already been gotten off the Queen by good samaritans in the area with boats."

The vessel had run aground on rocks near Porter's Island, on the north side of the harbor, but its crew was able to get the vessel free without assistance, Puzzuoli said.

I'm with you, Duane.

Thanks John ~ in addition to that story there were a couple other Superior related stories. One about a man drowning at McLain State Park and one about a 14 foot boat flipping in Big Traverse Bay. The boaters were rescued by nearby boaters and it seems all is well with them.

Great summer pics and story.

Oh wow! That really got me excited for next
week. I'm really hoping that we get a nice wind
off the lake like that because the water is so
very much warmer then. I was telling my friend
yesterday, when we were at the pool doing our
exercising, that I'm really going to have a hard
time getting into that lake this year because the
pool temp is set at 87 degrees. So wonderful to
go and do our exercising in. But if we get a
breeze like that, the water will be wonderful,
especially if it's really hot out.

Awesome pictures.

I hope Queen wasn't damaged by its encounter with the rocks! (A bit of a strange event, especially with the lake level higher this year!)

Amazing pics. I have actually never seen the Eagle
River beach quite that crowded. I have been heading
out to more remote beaches lately. We are so spoiled
around here--beaches in about every direction.
