Joe Kirkish has a mystery he'd like us to help him solve. A few weeks ago when he was up at his cottage near Copper Harbor, he said he noticed this yellow-greenish substance coming to shore, very slowly with the waves, as it oozed between the rocks - but there was nothing beyond the rocks as far as he could see to suggest where it came from. He also mentioned that this same phenomenon had occurred once some years back.

So, does anyone have any idea what this pool of yellowish goop is and where it comes from? It is quite mysterious. Is it from the depths of the Lake Superior? Or maybe from the skies above? Inquiring minds want to know...

Somebody lose their can of split pea soup?

By Tomfromthesoo (Tomfromthesoo) on Monday, July 6, 2015 - 08:47 am:

The yellow goo is pollen. Primarily white pine pollen. It's on
your car, patio furniture, everything outdoors but it really shows
up in the water.

Interesting! Looks like an overabundance of pine tree pollen.

By Janie T. (Bobbysgirl) on Monday, July 6, 2015 - 09:37 am:

Tomfromthesoo, thank you for explanation. I would have never guessed!

To have this collection of pollen on the water at this time of year isn't unusual, happens every June/July!

Soylent Green is people, as Charlton Heston would say.

By George Kahoun (Bkahouna) on Monday, July 6, 2015 - 10:40 am:

Get a sample take it to Tech or Northern! To me It looks like oil or a chemical.

By Dunerat (Dunerat) on Monday, July 6, 2015 - 10:53 am:

Pollen.

By David S. (Yooperdfs) on Monday, July 6, 2015 - 12:16 pm:

Obviously, it's Soylent Yellow, not as high grade
as Soylent Green but we get what we get.

By eugenia r. thompson (Ert) on Monday, July 6, 2015 - 02:51 pm:

Sure looks like pollen to me -- we get it every
spring here in GA.

West Virginia votes Yes to pollen as well.

By Phil Kuusisto (Pkuusisto) on Monday, July 6, 2015 - 06:03 pm:

I am sure it is pine pollen. We get it here when the new foliage comes in. It sure is a pain and gets into everything.

By Capt. Paul (Eclogite) on Monday, July 6, 2015 - 06:39 pm:

Looks like pine pollen as others have suggested.

By Donna (Donna) on Monday, July 6, 2015 - 09:15 pm:

Pollen gets my vote. For sure.

By Alex "UP-Goldwinger" (Alex) on Monday, July 6, 2015 - 09:50 pm:

David S....and the nice thing about Soylent Yellow...no gristle.

Looks like the State of Maine's EPA agrees it's
pine pollen with no adverse long term water quality
issues.

Ask the county extension agent in Houghton for an
explanation. If he/she doesn't know they will
contact MSU for an answer. But pollen is
probably right.

By David Walmsley (Djw) on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 - 12:56 pm:

I agree, looks like some kind of pollen.

By Alan Ralph (Thebotttomline) on Wednesday, July 8, 2015 - 06:59 pm:

We experienced the same thing in Ontonagon the weekend of June 26, we figured it was pollen.
